Office workers
If you spend long hours in front of the computer
Spending more than eight hours a day in front of a screen at work, the stress and poor sleep have made neck and shoulder pain a daily occurrence. Painkillers only provide temporary relief and do not address the root cause.
- My neck and shoulders are stiff and tight, and the pain gets worse in the afternoon.
- Chronic headaches and decreased concentration affect work.
- High stress levels can lead to insomnia and anxiety.
- Wrist pain, suspected mouse hand

Focus on natural health
For those seeking natural remedies
Rather than medication or invasive treatments, you prefer natural, safe methods with fewer side effects to regulate your body and improve your health from the root.
- Chronic pain recurs frequently; the goal is to cure it rather than just relieve the pain.
- For menstrual pain, I hope there are options other than medication.
- Looking to improve sleep and mood using natural methods
- I am interested in cosmetic acupuncture and pursue natural anti-aging.
The principles of acupuncture: a fusion of traditional wisdom and modern science
The therapeutic effects of acupuncture can be understood from both traditional Chinese medicine theory and modern science.
Explanation of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, there is a life energy in the human body called " Qi ," which flows through channels called " meridians ." When the flow of Qi is obstructed or imbalanced, it can lead to pain, illness, or emotional distress.
Acupuncture works by stimulating specific acupoints on the meridians to clear blockages, restore the smooth flow of Qi, and promote the body's return to a naturally balanced and healthy state. This is precisely what traditional Chinese medicine refers to as "where there is free flow, there is no pain; where there is pain, there is no free flow."
Explanation by modern science
Modern research indicates that acupoints are locations where nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue are highly concentrated in the human body. Stimulating these acupoints triggers a response in the central nervous system.
This process activates immune cells to repair the affected area, prompts the brain to release endorphins (the body's natural pain relievers), and affects the secretion of neurotransmitters and hormones. This cascade of physiological effects helps reduce pain, inflammation, and regulate bodily functions—which explains why acupuncture is effective in treating a wide range of conditions, from pain to insomnia.

The scope of acupuncture treatment: Application based on actual symptoms.
Acupuncture is a versatile therapy with widely recognized efficacy for a wide range of conditions. Rigorous scientific and clinical studies have demonstrated its benefits, making it a safe and cost-effective treatment option.
The following are some of the main conditions that we treat with acupuncture, and which are supported by scientific evidence:
Chronic pain
Extensive evidence supports the efficacy of acupuncture in treating chronic pain, including lower back, neck, and shoulder pain, with lasting effects.
Headache and migraine
Studies show that a course of acupuncture can reduce the frequency and intensity of chronic headaches and migraines, with effects comparable to preventative medications.
Knee pain and osteoarthritis
For patients with knee osteoarthritis, acupuncture has been shown to effectively relieve pain and improve physical function, providing a valuable alternative to traditional treatments.
Back pain and sciatica
Acupuncture is more effective than some medications for sciatica and can provide significant short-term relief for chronic low back pain.
Sports injuries
Acupuncture can help relieve short-term pain, improve function, and accelerate the recovery from sports injuries such as sprains, tendinitis, and muscle strains.
Fibromyalgia
For patients with fibromyalgia, acupuncture can improve their pain, stiffness, and overall quality of life.
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Commonly known as "mouse hand".Studies have shown that acupuncture (especially as an adjunct therapy) can relieve pain, improve symptoms, and enhance functional status in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome.
Insomnia and anxiety
Acupuncture has been proven to be a safe and effective therapy that can improve sleep quality, increase total sleep time, and reduce anxiety, especially for insomnia caused by pain or depression.
Menstrual cramps (primary dysmenorrhea)
Evidence shows that acupuncture can effectively reduce the intensity and duration of menstrual cramps and related symptoms, providing many women with a safe alternative to medication.
Cosmetic Acupuncture
Natural anti-agingCosmetic acupuncture uses finer needles than regular acupuncture to stimulate facial acupoints and meridians, improving blood circulation and promoting collagen production. This results in effects such as reducing wrinkles, firming and lifting the skin, brightening the complexion, and reducing puffiness. Compared to other cosmetic treatments like injectable wrinkle removal and laser wrinkle removal, cosmetic acupuncture is a safer treatment method with fewer side effects.
Conditions that can be improved: facial and neck wrinkles, crow's feet, nasolabial folds, dark circles, facial swelling and edema, asymmetrical face, enlarged masseter muscles, etc.
Your acupuncture treatment experience
Your comfort and safety are our top priorities. At Shangyitang, a typical acupuncture treatment includes:
1
Personalized Consultation
Your doctor will first discuss your health problems, symptoms, and treatment goals with you to develop a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs. This step ensures that the treatment is completely tailored to your personal requirements.
2
Gentle acupuncture
Our physicians use disposable, sterile, and extremely fine needles. During the acupuncture, you may only feel a very slight tingling or tingling sensation, with minimal pain. The needles used for acupuncture are much finer than those used for blood draws, making it far more comfortable than you might imagine.
3
The feeling of "gaining qi"
After the needle is inserted into the correct position, you may feel a slight soreness, numbness, distension, or heaviness around the acupoint. This is a normal and ideal sensation, known as " deqi ," which indicates that the acupoint has been effectively activated and the treatment is working.
4
Relax and rest
During the needle retention period, you will lie down and rest for about 20 to 30 minutes. Most patients find this to be a deeply relaxing process—some even fall asleep during it.
5
Electroacupuncture (if needed)
For certain conditions, especially pain management, your doctor may recommend electroacupuncture. This involves attaching tiny clips to needles to deliver gentle pulses of electrical current. This procedure is painless and enhances stimulation of acupoints for a stronger therapeutic effect.
Kind tips
It is recommended to eat a light meal before treatment and avoid receiving acupuncture on an empty stomach. After treatment, drink plenty of water to help the body detoxify and promote recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Acupuncture has a very wide range of therapeutic applications, and scientific research supports its efficacy in treating the following conditions: chronic pain (lower back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain), headaches and migraines, knee pain and osteoarthritis, sciatica, sports injuries, fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel syndrome (mouse hand), insomnia and anxiety, menstrual cramps, and cosmetic acupuncture (reducing wrinkles, firming and lifting skin), etc. If your condition is not listed above, please feel free to contact us via WhatsApp .
Effectiveness varies from person to person and depends on the nature and severity of the condition. Some patients experience significant improvement after their first treatment; for chronic conditions, several consecutive treatments are usually recommended to consolidate the results. Your doctor will develop a personalized treatment plan based on your specific situation during your initial consultation.
When performed by a qualified and registered Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner, acupuncture is a very safe treatment method. We use only disposable sterile needles to eliminate the risk of cross-infection. Common minor reactions may include temporary slight bruising or soreness at the acupuncture site, which usually subsides quickly. Compared to long-term use of painkillers, acupuncture has extremely low side effects.
Electroacupuncture, based on traditional acupuncture, involves attaching tiny clips to needles to deliver gentle pulses of electrical current to enhance stimulation of acupoints. This procedure is painless and is particularly suitable for treating more severe pain. Your doctor will determine whether electroacupuncture is necessary based on your condition.
Cosmetic acupuncture uses finer needles than regular acupuncture to stimulate facial acupoints, promoting blood circulation and collagen production, thereby reducing wrinkles, firming and lifting the skin, and brightening the complexion. Compared to injectable wrinkle removal and laser treatments, cosmetic acupuncture is a natural therapy with fewer side effects, is safer, and contains no chemicals, making it suitable for those seeking a natural skincare approach.
This is highly recommended. Prolonged desk work can easily lead to urban ailments such as cervical strain, stiff neck and shoulders, headaches, and lower back pain. Acupuncture can effectively relieve these pains caused by poor posture, while also improving insomnia and anxiety caused by work stress. Many office workers have reported significant improvements in sleep quality and mental state at work after receiving acupuncture treatments, in addition to reduced pain.
Sheung Yi Tong has two clinics: the Wan Chai Clinic , managed by Dr. Cheung Yung (11/F, Yu Kong Building, 90 Jaffe Road, Wan Chai MTR Station Exit C), and the Jordan Clinic, managed by Dr. Cheng Yiu-Chun (3/F, Kin Neng Development Building, 59 Parkes Street, Jordan MTR Station Exit C2). We recommend making an appointment online through the Fresha online booking system or by contacting us via WhatsApp at 5427 3297 .
