Our commitment: Accurate diagnosis first, then targeted treatment.

This is our unwavering principle. We believe that haphazard treatment will only waste your time and money. Therefore, we combine the four diagnostic methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine—inspection, auscultation and olfaction, inquiry, and palpation—with our unique palpation technique to carefully examine the subtle changes in your body's structure. When necessary, we will also refer to modern imaging reports such as X-rays and MRI scans to comprehensively understand your condition. Only after making an accurate diagnosis will we propose the most suitable treatment plan for you.

Our treatment methods are not based on a single approach, but rather integrate the strengths of various schools of thought, specifically designed to address the health problems of urban dwellers in Hong Kong . The following four key features distinguish Shangyitang from ordinary Chinese medicine clinics.

Shangyitang's Four Major Treatment Features

1. Based on Lingnan medicine, and tailored to Hong Kong's climate.

Our medical philosophy is based on Lingnan medicine, with a particular focus on treating various pains, dampness-related ailments, and internal medicine problems caused by Hong Kong's hot and humid climate, making our treatments more suitable for the local physique.

2. Combining medicine and martial arts, the bone-setting and repositioning techniques are exquisite.

We have incorporated the exquisite bridging techniques of Foshan Wing Chun into the Long Family Bone Setting and Repositioning Technique. This unique "medicine and martial arts integration" technique makes the method safe, precise, and effective in addressing bone and tendon misalignments.

3. Unique palpation technique to identify the root cause of pain.

Instruments alone may not be able to detect all problems. Our doctors determine the location and extent of pain through palpation, check for abnormalities in bony landmarks, accurately locate the source of pain, and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

4. Strict adherence to tradition, guaranteed by a strong medical team.

All attending physicians at Shangyitang must undergo rigorous internal training and assessment to master diagnostic techniques, acupuncture, bone setting, and palpation skills, ensuring adherence to Shangyitang's professional standards.

Professional Traditional Chinese Medicine Bone and Joint Setting: Combating Injuries and Pain

At Shangyitang, we integrate centuries-old traditional Chinese medicine wisdom with modern medical knowledge to specialize in treating various musculoskeletal injuries. Our TCM bone-setting and trauma therapy aims to directly address the root cause of pain, relieve discomfort, and accelerate your body's self-repair capabilities.

Three authentic lineages, guaranteeing strength

Our core treatments are built upon the over forty years of exceptional medical expertise of our founder, Master Zhang Yong. His unique approach is a culmination of three major orthodox traditions, ensuring that our treatments are both deeply rooted in tradition and aligned with modern scientific principles.

1

Academic Clinical Basic

Master Zhang Yong graduated from the School of Traditional Chinese Medicine at Jinan University in Guangzhou. He received formal clinical training in the "Lingnan School of Traditional Chinese Medicine" and has a solid foundation.

2

Authentic lineage of martial arts and medicine (dual transmission of medicine and martial arts)

Master Zhang is a disciple of Cen Neng, the Wing Chun master from Foshan, and has fully inherited his true teachings of "bone setting and trauma treatment," inheriting the authentic techniques of combining medicine and martial arts, passed down orally and through personal instruction.

3

Combining modern human anatomy

We also incorporate the essence of spinal treatment from Professor Long Cenghua, a national treasure-level TCM doctor, and integrate traditional bone setting with modern human anatomy to make our techniques more precise, scientific, and safe.

Treatment scope of sprains and fractures

Our bone-setting techniques are applicable to a variety of new and old injuries and have a positive effect on pain management.

Acute injury (sprains, bruises, and bone injuries)

ankle and wrist sprains
Muscle and ligament strain
Joint dislocation
Bruising and soft tissue contusions
Minor bone fracture (as an adjunct treatment)

Chronic pain management

Acupuncture: Ancient Wisdom of Modern Healing

Acupuncture is a treasure of Traditional Chinese Medicine, refined and perfected over thousands of years. It involves inserting extremely fine, disposable, sterile needles into specific acupoints on the body to provide treatment. At Shangyitang, we utilize traditional acupuncture therapy to address various modern urban ailments, from chronic pain to stress disorders, helping you regain balance and health.

The principles of acupuncture: a fusion of traditional wisdom and modern science

Traditional Chinese medicine explains that there is a life energy in the human body called "Qi," which flows through channels called "meridians." When the flow of Qi is obstructed or imbalanced, it can lead to pain, illness, or emotional distress. Acupuncture stimulates specific acupoints on the meridians to clear blockages, restore the smooth flow of Qi, and help the body return to a naturally balanced and healthy state.

Modern science explains that acupoints are locations where nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue are highly concentrated. Stimulating these acupoints can activate immune cells to repair local areas, prompt the brain to release endorphins (the body's natural pain relievers), and affect the secretion of neurotransmitters and hormones, helping to reduce pain, inflammation, and regulate bodily functions.

The scope of acupuncture treatment: Application based on actual symptoms.

Acupuncture is a versatile therapy with widely recognized efficacy in treating a wide range of diseases. Below are some of the major conditions for which we have treated with acupuncture, and for which there is scientific evidence to support our findings:

Chronic pain +

Extensive evidence supports the efficacy of acupuncture in treating chronic pain, including lower back, neck, and shoulder pain, with lasting effects.

Headache and migraine +

Studies show that a course of acupuncture can reduce the frequency and intensity of chronic headaches and migraines, with effects comparable to preventative medications.

Knee pain and osteoarthritis +

For patients with knee osteoarthritis, acupuncture has been shown to effectively relieve pain and improve physical function, providing a valuable alternative to traditional treatments.

Back pain and sciatica +

Acupuncture is more effective than some medications for sciatica and can provide significant short-term relief for chronic low back pain.

Sports injuries +

Acupuncture can help relieve short-term pain, improve function, and accelerate the recovery from sports injuries such as sprains, tendinitis, and muscle strains.

Fibromyalgia +

For patients with fibromyalgia, acupuncture can improve their pain, stiffness, and overall quality of life.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (mouse hand) +

Studies have shown that acupuncture (especially as an adjunct therapy) can relieve pain, improve symptoms, and enhance functional status in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome.

Insomnia and Anxiety +

Acupuncture has been shown to improve sleep quality, increase total sleep time, and reduce anxiety, and is especially effective for insomnia caused by pain or depression.

Menstrual cramps (primary dysmenorrhea) +

Evidence shows that acupuncture can effectively reduce the intensity and duration of menstrual cramps and related symptoms, providing many women with a safe alternative to medication.

Cosmetic Acupuncture +

Cosmetic acupuncture uses finer needles than regular acupuncture to stimulate facial acupoints and meridians, improving blood circulation and promoting collagen production to reduce wrinkles, tighten and lift the skin, brighten the complexion, and reduce puffiness. Compared to injections or laser treatments, cosmetic acupuncture has fewer side effects and is safer. It can improve: facial and neck wrinkles, crow's feet, nasolabial folds, dark circles, facial swelling and edema, facial asymmetry, and enlarged masseter muscles.

Your acupuncture treatment experience

Your comfort and safety are our top priorities. At Shangyitang, a typical acupuncture treatment includes:

Personalized Consultation

The doctor will first discuss your health problems, symptoms, and treatment goals with you to develop a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs.

Gentle acupuncture

We use disposable, sterile, and extremely fine needles. During the procedure, you may only experience a very slight tingling or tingling sensation, with minimal pain.

The feeling of "gaining qi"

After the needle is inserted into the correct position, you may feel a slight soreness, numbness, distension, or heaviness around the acupoint. This is a normal and ideal sensation, known as "deqi" (obtaining qi).

Relax and rest

During the needle retention period, you will lie down and rest for about 20–30 minutes. Most patients find this to be a process of deep relaxation.

Electroacupuncture (if needed)

For certain types of pain, doctors may recommend electroacupuncture—which involves attaching tiny clips to needles to deliver gentle pulses of electrical current that do not cause pain and can enhance the therapeutic effect.

Why choose Shangyitang acupuncture treatment?

Established in 2015, Shangyitang is managed by internationally renowned Dr. Zhang Yong, who brings over 40 years of extensive experience to our clinical practice. Our electronic medical record database has accumulated over 100,000 cases, reflecting our rich experience and trusted reputation in acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine.

All our physicians are registered Chinese medicine practitioners with the Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Council and are proficient in various Chinese medicine therapies, including acupuncture, traumatology, chiropractic, massage, herbal medicine, cupping, and moxibustion. We are committed to providing you with the highest standard of care in a professional and friendly environment.

Professional pain management massage: addressing the root cause of muscle and joint pain

Suffering from chronic neck and shoulder pain, lower back pain, and general back aches? Regular massages only offer temporary relief, while Traditional Chinese Medicine's "Tuina" (massage) is a therapeutic approach designed to address the root cause of pain. At Shangyitang, our pain management Tuina is supervised by a team of registered TCM practitioners, combining authentic bone-setting techniques with modern clinical practice to provide you with professional, safe, and effective treatment options.

What is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) massage? Massage is an important part of TCM, ranking alongside acupuncture and herbal medicine. It is not just ordinary health massage, but a treatment method that emphasizes "relaxing muscles and tendons, correcting bones, promoting blood circulation, and unblocking meridians." TCM theory holds that "pain arises from obstruction," and massage uses professional techniques such as "pushing, grasping, pressing, and kneading" to act on specific acupoints, meridians, and myofascia to unblock qi and blood, restoring the body's balance.

Shangyitang's unique features: Traditional Chinese Medicine combined with nursing care × Foshan bone-setting techniques

Authentic Foshan bone-setting techniques

The therapist has received rigorous training in Foshan bone setting and is particularly skilled in treating deep muscle and bone strain, joint dislocation, and soft tissue adhesions.

Registered Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners in Charge and Supervision

The treatment plan is personally diagnosed and planned by a registered TCM physician, and the therapist performs massage under the guidance of the TCM physician to ensure accuracy and effectiveness.

Based on empirical evidence, results are paramount.

Clinical studies have confirmed that massage has a good therapeutic effect on various types of musculoskeletal pain.

Addressing common problems faced by urban dwellers

It is specially designed to treat office syndrome (neck pain, frozen shoulder), chronic lumbar muscle strain, sciatica, etc.

Scientific Empirical Evidence of Tuina

Modern medical research is gradually confirming the therapeutic effects of massage. Scientific studies indicate that massage can promote local blood circulation, help reduce inflammation, and stimulate the body to secrete endorphins, achieving a natural pain-relieving effect. A systematic review published in 2023 analyzed data from 15 studies involving 1,390 patients, concluding that massage is an effective treatment for improving pain and physical function in chronic nonspecific lower back pain. Regarding chronic neck pain, studies have shown that patients who received six massage treatments over three weeks experienced a significant reduction in neck pain and improved quality of life.

Our massage therapy process

Traditional Chinese Medicine Diagnosis

First, a registered Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner will conduct a professional diagnosis to accurately identify the root cause of your pain.

Plan formulation

A traditional Chinese medicine doctor will develop a personalized massage treatment plan based on your constitution and condition, and you will communicate with the massage therapist.

Treatment execution

Clean clothes are provided for changing, and the massage therapist performs targeted massage treatments on relevant areas according to the guidance of a traditional Chinese medicine doctor.

Professional advice

After treatment, traditional Chinese medicine practitioners may recommend combining herbal medicine, acupuncture, or daily care to consolidate the therapeutic effect.

Please note: Massage is not suitable for cases with broken skin, acute sprains, or fractures.

Professional TCM cupping therapy: relieves pain and regulates the body's constitution

Cupping is a traditional Chinese medicine external therapy that uses negative pressure inside a cup to adhere to specific acupoints or pain points on the skin, thereby unblocking meridians and promoting blood circulation. At Shangyitang, we insist that all treatments are performed by professional TCM doctors, combining traditional wisdom with modern clinical diagnosis to provide you with a safe, accurate, and effective cupping experience.

Why choose Shangyitang Cupping Therapy?

Registered Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner

The entire treatment process is personally operated and supervised by government-registered Chinese medicine practitioners. A professional diagnosis is conducted first, and then the most suitable cupping plan is determined.

Diagnose first, then treat.

We adhere to the principle of "no treatment without diagnosis." Cupping is part of an integrated treatment plan, and the TCM practitioner will decide whether to combine it with acupuncture, bone setting, or Chinese herbal medicine.

Strict disinfection, hygiene and safety

We use professional glass cupping jars, and all utensils undergo strict disinfection procedures to eliminate the risk of cross-infection.

The wisdom of cupping in Traditional Chinese Medicine: The main function of cupping is "free flow prevents pain." When the body's Qi and blood are not flowing smoothly and the meridians are blocked, discomfort such as pain, soreness, and numbness will occur. Cupping can unblock the meridians, promote Qi and blood circulation, improve local blood circulation; dispel wind and cold, remove dampness; reduce swelling and relieve pain, relax muscles and relieve spasms.

Cupping mainly helps to relieve problems

Various types of pain: neck and shoulder pain, lower back pain, muscle strain
Early stage of wind-cold common cold: dispel wind and cold, and relieve symptoms
Excessive dampness in the body: fatigue, weakness, and heaviness in the limbs.
Indigestion and gastrointestinal problems

Treatment Procedures and Precautions

We are committed to providing you with a safe and comfortable treatment experience. Our TCM practitioners will use strictly sterilized glass cupping jars on the back or specific areas for approximately 10–15 minutes. The circular marks left on the skin after cupping are normal; the color of these marks reflects the degree of blood stasis, cold, or dampness in the body, and they usually fade on their own within a week. After treatment, it is recommended to keep warm, avoid drafts and chills, and wait several hours before showering.

The following individuals are not suitable for cupping: those with coagulation disorders or currently taking anticoagulants such as thrombolytic agents; those with skin injuries or allergies; pregnant women (especially in the abdomen and lumbosacral region); those with severe heart disease or kidney failure; and those who are extremely weak, excessively hungry or full, or have been drinking alcohol. If you have any of these conditions, please inform your doctor.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment: Personalized Health Plans

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is the essence of TCM, using natural medicinal materials (mainly plants, but also some minerals and animal-derived ingredients) to restore the balance of Yin and Yang, Qi and Blood in the human body. At Shangyitang, we combine this wisdom passed down for thousands of years with modern strict requirements for the purity, safety, and efficacy of medicines to create a personalized prescription best suited to your individual constitution.

Traditional Chinese medicine vs. ready-to-use Chinese medicine granules

Traditional Chinese medicine decoction pieces

The most classic form of traditional Chinese medicine. The doctor's prescription consists of a variety of medicinal herbs, which you can take home and decoct yourself or have us decoct it for you.

No-decoction concentrated Chinese herbal medicine granules

High-concentration Chinese herbal granules designed for busy urban dwellers. Simply dissolve in hot water for convenient and time-saving administration; precise dosage, no reduction in efficacy.

How do traditional Chinese medicines work?

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory holds that diseases originate from imbalances in the body's Qi, blood, and organ functions. TCM utilizes the "four natures and five flavors" (cold, hot, warm, and cool properties, and pungent, sweet, sour, bitter, and salty flavors) and meridian tropism of different medicinal herbs to correct imbalances in the body. Physicians adhere to the rigorous principle of "principal, assistant, adjuvant, and guide" in herbal formulation—the principal herb as the main agent, the assistant herbs as supporting agents, the adjuvant herbs as harmonizing agents, and the guide herbs as guiding herbs—to maximize the synergistic effect of the prescription, addressing both the cause of the disease and the patient's constitution.

Scope of treatment of traditional Chinese medicine

Digestive system problems: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), etc.
Skin problems: Chronic dermatitis such as eczema
Gynecological treatment: menstrual cramps, endometriosis, etc.
Pain management: promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis, reducing inflammation and relieving pain

Shangyitang's promise: Safety, efficiency, and professionalism.

External Chinese Medicine Patch: The Wisdom of Lingnan Orthopedics & the Crystallization of Modern Technology

Topical application of traditional Chinese medicine is a traditional method for treating pain in Traditional Chinese Medicine. However, many people have experienced the burning sensation, strong odor, and pain and discomfort when removing traditional ointments. At Shangyitang, we combine the century-old wisdom of Lingnan herbal medicine with modern material science to create a new generation of herbal patches—a refreshing, comfortable, and highly effective modern pain relief solution.

Lingnan Herbal Heritage: Specially Designed for Hot and Humid Climates

Our formula originates from Lingnan, China. The Lingnan region has a hot and humid climate, similar to Hong Kong, and therefore, physicians throughout history have been skilled in utilizing medicinal herbs possessing the following properties:

Dispelling wind and dampness: Targets aches, pains, and numbness that occur when there is excessive dampness or when the weather changes.
Promotes blood circulation and removes blood stasis: Improves blood circulation and relieves stinging pain and swelling caused by falls, injuries or strain.
Warming the meridians and promoting circulation: It warms and unblocks the meridians, dispels cold and relieves pain, and is especially effective in relieving joint stiffness and muscle tension.

He has always hoped to transform the essence of his clinical practice into products that are both highly effective and convenient, making them essential health products for every family and office. This dedication is the origin of our flagship product line.

Advantages of hydrogel technology

Our medicated patches use advanced hydrogel materials, setting a new standard for topical physiotherapy:

Highly efficient penetration, directly addressing pain points

The high water content of the hydrogel creates an optimal absorption environment for the skin, helping herbal extracts to penetrate the target area more effectively and deeply.

Hypoallergenic and skin-friendly, say goodbye to sensitivity

The material is gentle and highly breathable, significantly reducing the risk of skin allergies, redness, and itching, making it suitable for long-term use.

Painless removal, leaving no residue

The patch can be easily peeled off without pulling on the skin or hair, and it won't leave any sticky residue that's hard to clean.

Refreshing and odorless, convenient and invisible

It has a fresh and elegant scent, feels dry and comfortable after application, and can be easily hidden under clothing without affecting daily life or appearance.

Important Note: Our range of topical herbal products is designed to help you improve everyday acute and chronic pain and discomfort. Zhang Yong, the founder of Shangyitang and a registered Chinese medicine practitioner, is primarily based on Lingnan medical techniques. His acupuncture methods are very sophisticated. He not only uses scientifically sound methods such as needle retention, rapid needle insertion, and electroacupuncture to stimulate the brain's self-repairing ability, but also uses the "burning mountain fire, penetrating the sky coolness" technique in conjunction with needle insertion to achieve the effect of "needle reaching the qi, needling to tonify and reduce" .

Lingnan medicine, with its regional characteristics, is well-suited for treating epidemics and common urban pains prevalent in the hot and humid climate of Guangdong. Lingnan orthopedics, in particular, has its unique techniques, primarily passed down through apprenticeship, emphasizing "the transmission of methods, not books," relying entirely on individual skill and clinical practice. Besides acupuncture, bone setting and spinal manipulation, and treatment of sprains and bruises, Dr. Zhang Yong advocates prevention rather than treatment, focusing on preventing disease before it manifests. Therefore, he is deeply engrossed in studying Chinese herbal formulas, combining internal and external herbal remedies, exercise, and herbal soups—a complete system of superior medical treatment based on syndrome differentiation and treatment.

He subscribed to the Confucian value of "If one cannot be a good prime minister, one should be a good doctor," which has profoundly influenced the spirit of traditional Chinese medicine. Shangyitang has always prioritized benevolence and skillful medical practice, caring for patients; thus winning the trust and support of the general public and earning a stellar reputation.
